113) Aikido and the Unified Body: January 2014
We have spent the last couple of years working very hard at trying to create and improve our ability to move with a unified body that is governed with clear intent. This has been very hard work for all of us. Everyone has improved to varying degrees and more importantly, everyone is learning how to teach what they know about this to new students. I would like to start off this new year with a renewed sense of awareness in how important it is for the nage to present to the uke with a unified body, as opposed to trying to create this condition after the attack has commenced. The next part of focus is to maintain this intent-driven, unified body throughout the entire technique. Finding the points of disconnect is a very important part of learning how we can improve further.
We are fortunate to continue to have my three teachers come back to our dojo for some more seminars this year. I am deeply indebted to Imaizumi Sensei, Ushiro Sensei and Dan Harden for their continued instruction to me. Their willingness to extend their teachings to all of us, including people from outside of our dojo, and even other styles of martial art is something that should not be taken lightly. I strongly encourage each and every student to avail themselves to these special training opportunities throughout this year. Most of these seminars will be open to the public, some will be quite limited to outside participation, while others will be available to only our students.
I look forward to 2014 as a year in which each of us will continue to personally develop, while creating a stronger community that nurtures and sustains us!
